We came to the Bayside School Refusal Clinic not knowing what to expect after visiting other psychologists regarding our 15 year old daughter who was refusing school.
It’s devastating to see your child go from a confident, well rounded member of a school community to an introvert who has pretty much given up participating in most things. We also questioned if we were doing the right thing by coming along when our daughter was refusing to see a therapist herself. The advice you gave my husband and I in regards to her — such as what she was going through and how we might deal with it was invaluable.
After 3 visits with you, implementing some of the subtle techniques you suggested, we began to see her come out of her self-imposed shell and return to us.
Now, we have our daughter back. She’s started a new school today and was very excited about going. Our relationship with her has improved on every level. I feel like we’re hearing her for the first time. She has a voice and is now confident enough to use it. Teenage years are tough but I feel, now that we’ve spent some time with you we are on the right track to raising a confident adult. Thank you so much. We are eternally grateful.

To watch my little boy rapidly go from a happy bright little boy to a traumatised 7 year old white knuckled with the fear of having to go to school was devastating. I thought we would have such difficulty getting him to open up to a stranger, but from the first meeting John engaged with him in a way that he really responded to so he looked forward to his sessions. John treated him with respect so he understood why the sessions were needed and how they would benefit him and he really learnt how to cope with the butterflies when they swell up in his tummy. He now has his confidence back and more. Although you would never wish your child to have difficult times, I think the result and the tools John shared with him have been really positive and will hopefully equip Jack for life. I really appreciate the support and follow up you have given me; and thank you for taking it seriously and acting quickly before it got too out of control. He has really started to enjoy school again.

John has been active in building connections and rapport with students and their families throughout the whole time he has been here. He's highly knowledgeable, adaptable and highly personable in his care for our kids. More than half our students within the school currently see john for counselling support. He's the reason mental health is not a taboo word in our school.
